“MAKE Magazine brings the do-it-yourself mindset to all the exciting projects in your life and helps you make the most of technology at home and away from home. Projects in the magazine range from old-school balsa wood and tissue-paper airplanes to what to do to keep aging high-tech gadgets alive to building autonomous robots from junk.”

” Connecting Light explores opposing ideas of borders and connection through landscape art installation, open-source electronic hardware and software, and networks. Hundreds of six-foot-in-diameter balloons, equipped with high-powered LEDs driven by radio devices, illuminate Britain’s greatest Roman monument: the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.
Arrays of balloons are distributed among several Hadrian’s Wall viewing locations, creating a land-scale communications network transmitting audience-generated messages—represented as pulses of brightly colored light. Messages can be viewed on-site from Friday, August 31 through Saturday, September 1; remote audiences can personalize, transmit, and see messages via this Web site. “

This project is the continuation of my final project in undergrad named FOLDFACE, and also is an application of what I learned in my master program ITP. In my opinion, using technology buildings should be organisms capable to transform and move as a result of the interaction with people and their practices that are constantly changing.

According to that, this study is a research to design and develop a modular, structural and active piece that can generate an interactive surface, something like a “kinetic brick”. Transformable architecture is a series of experiments exploring math, geometry, mechanisms and ways to generate a dynamic architecture.

Some of this are experiments made in the class of Daniel Shiffman named Nature of Code, where the focus is on develop programming strategies and techniques simulating natural phenomenon using mathematics and physics concepts. The user can play moving the characters that also make expressions and sounds when they are falling down.

Make (or MAKE) is an American quarterly magazine published by[1] O’Reilly Media which focuses on do it yourself (DIY) and/or DIWO (Do It With Others) projects involving computers, electronics, robotics, metalworking, woodworking and other disciplines. The magazine is marketed to people who enjoy making things and features complex projects which can often be completed with cheap materials, including household items. Make magazine is considered “a central organ of the maker movement.” (description via wikipedia)

ITP student Marcele Godoy designed and sewed a handsome cat puppet, but went the extra mile by turning it into an animatronic keyboard player with full documentation.
Using Arduino, Processing, and an armature made of Lego, the user can push buttons on a computer that correspond to several Daft Punk samples, also causing the cat to mimic the moves of a righteous keyboard player.
Complete with tin foil and orange visor, this cat can surely kick out the jams, but an earlier incarnation that was purely human-controlled by puppeteer Antonius Wiriadjaja is also worth a look. Check it out!

This project was made for the Digital Fabrication class, using a sketch of Processing to get a Voronoi drawing. I took a part of this polygons and then y gave the lines a thickness, rounding the edges to maintain the organic shape of the sketch. The material available it was plywood(2 sheets 3/4) and the machine to cut the material it was a 3 axis CNC. So i tried to maximize the material to give the chair a volume using parallels layers and taking away material following the shape of the big piece.

This project is an exploration within interactivity, mechanics and animatronics, combining the technology and a handmade object.

Using Processing and Arduino the keyboard of the computer move two independent motors, one of them controls the horizontal movement of the hands, and the other one controls the vertical movement, also every key emits a pre-recorded sound. Therefore, the keyboards in the computer represent a keyboard in the piano, and every time the user press the keyboards on the computer, he/she is also making the cat plays the piano.

The mechanism is made with two servo motors and some pieces of legos.

This project is a visualization of a data through music and through a performance of a puppet. I used the puppet that moves following commands from the computer, using arduino as a communicator between both. So as an irony I chose data about experiments with animals. The visualization shows the purposes to experiment with animals in UK in 2009, and also the kind of animals and the amount of them in every purpose, according to the data that i got in http://www.guardian.co.uk/.

The size of every circle indicates the amount of animals used in a purpose (tracks) and then, the fraction of colors indicate the kind of animals and the number of that kind of animals compared to the total amount used for a specific purpose (music notes).

The whole composition is a kind of album with songs, where every song is a human purpose to experiment with animals. In every track, the kind of animal is a specific prerecorded sound. The amount of animals compared with the total is related with the amount of loops of every sound and the kind of beat that the song has.
